The modern-day world premiere of Le Carnaval, Mascarade Royale by Jean-Baptiste Lully, presented in a critical edition by Bernardo Ticci (BTE2025), will feature Giuseppina Bridelli among its principal artists. A leading figure of the Baroque repertoire, the mezzosoprano from Piacenza reflects on the artistic and theatrical significance of this project, which will be presented in Ferrara, Modena and Florence: “2026 began for me with Atys by Lully at the Opéra Royal de Versailles and continues in the company of this immense 17th century musician, an Italian and naturalised Frenchman, rewarding me with the opportunity to take part in the modern-day world premiere of his final commédie-ballet. Le Carnaval is a fascinating opera, an all-encompassing idea of theatre, consisting of distinctive Carnival figures who come together in a “mascarade royale” in which dance, song and music combine seamlessly. The Orchestra Modo Antiquo conducted by Federico Maria Sardelli, the Chorus of I Musici del Gran Principe and the NoGravity Theatre team have reconstructed a sumptuous stage performance with this music by Lully that is varied and entertaining with a decidedly unusual touch (we actually sing in three languages!), in which teamwork is essential. Le Carnaval will be staged in a world premiere at the Teatro Comunale, Ferrara (14th and 15th February), and at the Teatro Comunale, Modena (27th February and 1st March), ending the tour in the composer’s native city, Florence, where we’re giving a concert performance on 7th March.
Good luck to all of us and to my beloved Lully, whose music I hope will be performed more and more often in Italy… as well as at prestigious theatres in the rest of Europe where they’re expecting us in 2027!”
The opera will be broadcast live on 14th February at 8pm on OperaStreaming
